The Bay Area has some decent wage laws, especially San Francisco. (This does not mean that the law is always followed.) But in most parts of the country, many legal protections for employees do not exist. This book, Behind the Kitchen Door, focuses on the restaurant industry, and the workers, who are, in so many ways, exploited by it. Jayaraman's book is interesting, not just from a worker's rights perspective, but also from a public health perspective. Restaurant employees who cannot take sick leave, ending us spreading illnesses to the restaurant's customers -- and the general public.
